SW PLAYGROUND PROJECT
After a four year labor of love, the SW Playground Project completed in August 2014 phase one of a two-phase project. With the generosity of the Mandarin Oriental, Safeway, CSX, Station 4 restaurant, the Port of Washington Yacht Club, Gangplank Marina Slipcovers, and local residents, the playground portion of the 3rd and I Street Park, SW opened!
With the sponsorship of CBCC, the SW Playground Project raised approximately $85,000 in private funds, which led to the allocation of $450,000 in City funds to complete the playground. However, a second phase remains -- to finish installing retainer wall seats and repaving the badly-cracked pedestrian walkways -- estimated to cost an additional $300K.
Although it will not receive funding in 2015 or 2016, the project has the support of Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen, who has committed to ensuring this second phase is completed alongside planned renovations to the SW Library, which are expected in 2017.
The CBCC and SW Playground Project continue to be grateful for the donations and support from the community to make this grassroots effort a reality to bring our community together!
